Hazard Reduction or Hazard Production?

With extensive tracts of bushland having been decimated in the recent bushfires, which has impacted the lives of many millions of Australian native animals (inlcuding our beloved Dingo), the question must be raised as to the effectiveness of out-dated "Hazard Reduction" and "Backburning" practices. It is estimated that "backburns" conducted during these fires are likely to have destroyed as much, if not more, of our natural bushland than the "main" fire-fronts themselves. One justification for this was that fire fighters were in many cases not permitted to use water (due to drought restrictions) to actually extinguish the fires, and thus simply continued to light more and more fires, under the auspice of "backburns". But if the use of "fire to fight fire" is really the best way to tackle this issue, could we be doing it differently, with some concern for our wildlife that inhabit the spaces that we so eagerly destroy by way of "hazard reduction".

The below articles give us some hope for a middle ground between those who believe that we as humans do not need to "control" our natural environment at all, and those who eagerly support our current "socially accepted arson"...

I can also highly recommend David Horton's book, "The Pure State of Nature", to anyone wanting to gain a clearer picture of the history and myths surrounding the use of fire in this country, by both indigenous cultures and later settlers.

As a Dingo lover, this issue is dear to me, and I highly encourage those who also hold a concern for the lives and experiences of our beautiful wildlife and the longevity of Australian ecosystems, to provide some constructive input to the Federal parliament's investigation of current vegetation and land management practices in this country. Here is how to go about having your say...
